To teach a dog how to settle we practice the art of doing nothing! Your dog should have an understanding of a "Stay" or "Place"  and the "Down" command first before taking a field trip somewhere to literally do...nothing! No food rewards, no picking at the dirt, no greeting others...just soaking everything in.
