Exercises for Teaching Settle

Basic Obedience

This lesson focuses on teaching you how to train foundational verbal obedience cues such as sit, stay, and look. We also introduce the 3 D’s of obedience training — distractions, duration, and distance — and show you how to build each one successfully to create reliable, real-world obedience.

Polite Walking

This lesson focuses on using the leash and teaching heel — a key skill to prevent future pulling, frustration, and choking. You'll also learn how to hold the leash properly to avoid injury, and practice maintaining a consistent heel position. We’ll discuss how choosing the right walking equipment for your individual dog sets the foundation for successful walks, especially during adolescence.

Settle Skills

We focus on how to train a calm dog who can settle in a variety of environments. We also practice building on your down and introducing a place command. Additionally, we discuss how to phase out food rewards, as over-reliance on treats can lead to an unsettled or overly dependent dog over time.

Off Leash Control

This lesson focuses on building reliable off-leash control by teaching you how to properly handle a long line and use it as a tool for safe, effective training. We work on recall and impulse control skills around increasing distractions, helping your dog learn to return to you the first time, every time. You’ll gain confidence in managing distance while keeping safety and communication a priority.

Socialization

This lesson focuses on functional socialization — teaching your dog to remain neutral and calm around people, dogs, and real-world distractions. Whether your dog tends to be overly social and excitable or shy and avoidant, we guide them toward balanced, confident behavior. The goal isn’t forced interaction, but calm coexistence. We help you recognize and reinforce neutrality so your dog can navigate the world with emotional stability and focus.
